The Admissions Process

Our admissions process is designed to identify pupils who are able to benefit from our balanced and well-rounded education and to make a positive contribution towards the life of the School. Our main entry points are into Woodlands Nursery (age rising 3 – 4), Reception (age 4+) and Year 7 (age 11+) although entry into other year groups is possible during the school year if places are available.

Joining Woodlands Nursery

Nursery places (for children rising 3) are offered without an assessment. At all other entry points children are assessed to ensure that the curriculum we offer is suitable for them and that they meet our minimum standards. During the year before they are due to join us we invite children to visit the school so that we can get to know a little more about them.

Joining Reception or Year 1

For a child registered to enter Reception, or Year 1, the child will be invited to attend an assessment test early in the year preceding entry in September. The assessment tests are qualifying, not competitive, and children are not placed under any unnecessary pressure. Entry then depends on suitable vacancies.

Joining Year 2 to Year 6

For a child registered to enter Year 2 or above, the child will be called for a short interview and assessment test early in the year preceding entry in September. The School will then, with the help of the child’s present school, assess his or her standard of work.

Joining in Year 7

A number of children join us at Year 7 for the last two years in preparation for entry into independent senior schools. Staff at Beechwood have many years of experience in preparing children for the relevant entrance and scholarship exams. Beechwood has an outstanding record of examination success.  Read more about Year 7 entry here

An offer is then made subject to the child’s performance in assessments and the availability of places. For entry at 5+ and above, a confidential report is sought from the child’s current school.

Good for: Children who relish being challenged and welcome responsibility with both arms will thrive here. Parents who are willing to let go of the reins a little to let their child take the lead in their own education are likely to find the Beechwood ‘journey’ refreshing and exciting.
