Reception have really enjoyed learning all about Australia. We have talked about animals, the environment, climate and the culture. The children worked really hard on their paintings of Australian animals and used a variety of sources to find out animal facts. We were really proud of our finished displays – have a look below:

This half term, our history lessons will focus upon the lives and contributions of significant people who have changed the world.
This week we were inspired when learning about Marie Curie and her discoveries. She was an amazing scientist who won two Nobel Prizes for her important work and also paved the way for women to access higher education. This led to a great discussion about how we can achieve whatever we put our mind to. We designed medals for Marie, using what we had learnt about her life and achievements.

With World Book Day looming, Year 2 dived into two weeks of book-related activities this week. We focused on ‘Cops and Robbers’ written by the Allbergs – we found answers in the text by highlighting extracts, found and made strings of rhyming words, thought what we’d like to ask the characters and wrote ‘wanted’ descriptions for the robbers. The general consensus was that we would rather be a cop than robber…
“I would like to be a cop so I can stop robbers stealing things from lovely children who deserve their toys. Cops have guns, very fast shiny police cars and very cool jails too”
“I would like to be a cop because I like chasing people and I’m good at arresting people. I’d probably like staying up till three and drinking tea too”
“I would like to be a cop because I wouldn’t want to go to jail. Everything in there is absolutely horrible”
“I would like to be a cop because I can stop parents and children being sad AND you get a police dog!”
In keeping with the ‘Cops and Robbers’ theme, in maths we have been counting out ‘loot’! Manipulating the coins and notes is helping us quickly add and make amounts. At home, do empty the piggy bank and set up a shop to build on our growing confidence.
Over the next few weeks in DT we are investigating moving mechanisms with a view to designing our own cards with a moving part (I’d like to say why but it’s all a bit hush hush. Any detectives out there may work it out!) The two mechanisms we tried out this week were pop up and rocking. Enjoy looking at our prototype designs below:

Dogs in Disguise by Peter BentlyDogs in Disguise is a rhyming comedy – think Oi Frog in fancy dress! Peter Bently opens the readers’ eyes to the fact that dogs perhaps aren’t just being dogs. Maybe they are hiding in broad daylight; in the swimming pool dressed in their trunks and goggles, or in restaurants in their tuxedos. Colourfully illustrated and bursting with fun, this book is a joy to read.
This week’s Teacher’s Book of the Week is Mrs Brown’s choice. Her recommendation is Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and Patrick Benson. She loves it as there are three owl babies, one for each of her children!
