This Week in Year 3

World Book Day

World Book Day was on Thursday this week and was a real chance to celebrate the joy of reading. The children and adults all arrived in school, in costumes inspired by books. There was an amazing array of costumes and everyone got into the spirit of the day!  We started the day with an online assembly and quiz which united the Junior, Middle and Senior Departments. We then all enjoyed three sessions of Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) during which we spent 15 minutes reading for pleasure. You could hear a pin drop during these silent sessions – the children read with focus and obvious enjoyment.

The book fayre was a rich source of new reading inspiration and the children needed no encouragement to get stuck into their new books as soon as they returned to the classroom.. Many thanks to the English Department for their excellent organisation.

En safari à Beechwood

This week, year 3 pupils enjoyed going on a French animal safari in and around the school.

They found a variety of “animaux” including “un canard” by the swimming pool, “une tortue” (Mike) in the Science Department, as well as Bruce “un chien” in the Art Department! C’était fantastique!

Forest School

3P was the final class, this week, to go into the woods for Forest School. All three classes started their sessions by looking for the tell-tale signs of spring, as they took an alternative route into the forest to hunt for buds on the trees, for daffodils and for snowdrops.

The children then played a game in which they had to work with a partner who was blindfolded. They had to use only their voices to direct their partner to a tree of their choice and then back again. The partner then removed the blindfold and had to try and guess the tree. A simple and yet tricky game involving trust and good verbal communication. Another wonderful session in the fresh air with Mrs LeBas.

Looking to later in the term, we also have a whole year group session booked, postponed from last term, due to the snow. This session will be on Monday 20 March. We won’t have Christmas music but it will be an excellent opportunity for the whole of the year to come together for a morning of fresh air and laughter.

This Week in Year 4

Miss Bailey’s and Mrs Routledge’s Maths

Last week in Maths, Miss Bailey’s and Mrs Routledge’s Maths groups caused some chaos by drawing all over the tables! They used the numicon to make rectilinear shapes, measured the side lengths and then calculated the perimeter.

Quote of the day: “I feel so naughty, I love it!”

4P and 4R Forest School

This week when 4P and 4R went to Forest School the children learnt how to tie different knots including a paraknot! Using these new skills the children then worked collaboratively to create little ‘dens’ for a small cuddly creature. Some groups paired up so that their creature had a neighbour next door!

Thank you Mrs Le Bass for another fantastic Forest School lesson.

Year 4 Lego Club

In Lego Club, the pupils worked collaboratively to build a mansion which had a pizza oven and a jail!

They built it so it was quite high and they had to ensure that they used the right blocks to make the walls even. They had a problem to solve when building the roof, as they tried long flat pieces at first but they didn’t go across fully. They  solved the problem by putting small blocks around the edges so then the flat pieces could fit across.

They really enjoyed making their mansion and were very happy with their finished masterpiece!

This week in Year 5

Yesterday was World Book Day and Beechwood Park held its annual ‘Dress up as your favourite book character’ day.

Everyone in the School had the opportunity to reinvent themselves as their favourite character from a book. All the costumes in Year 5 were AMAZING! (Thank you, parents!) We had the pleasure of welcoming into the Year Group, amongst many others, Alex Rider, Thing 1 & Thing 2, Epic Zero, the BFG, an Oompa Loompa, Lunar Lovegood, and the Thing. Unfortunately, the ‘Bishop’ chess piece was unable to make it into school but still sent a photo across! What a brilliant idea!

All the children thoroughly enjoyed seeing their friends and teachers in their costumes.
Yr 5 World Book Day

Alongside the dressing up, we also had a whole school Zoom assembly and World Book Day quiz plus, at various points during the day, we had “D.E.A.R” – drop everything and read – sessions.

Book Recommendations by Year 5

Leo: A book I like is ‘Star Wars Ultimate Encyclopaedia New Edition’. This is because it lets you know lots of details about (almost) everything in the Star Wars Galaxy. I give this book 5 stars and would seriously recommend reading it if you are a Star Wars fan like me.

George: One of my favourite authors is Jeff Kinney who has written lots of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ books. It is a series of 14 books! I like the books because every page has a picture, it is long and easy for me to read.

Louis: The Rick Riordan books are really good because they teach you about mythology whilst being action-packed and you have a really good time reading them!

Joshua: I really like the Adventures on Trains series because the books are really intense and you never know where the plot is going to go and where it will end.

Yasmin: I love Roald Dahl books because they are really funny and have loads of mixed-up words!

Addie: At the moment I am reading ‘The Last Bear’ and I am enjoying it because it includes a bear and is also set in the Arctic Outpost and I LOVE NATURE!

Emilia: I am reading the ‘Wizards of Once’ and I like it because it is full of dark twists.

Charlotte: My favourite author is Jonathon Stroud, especially his ‘Lockwood’ series because they are hauntingly good.

Angus: At the moment I am reading ‘Sabotage on the Solar Express’ and it is really exciting because there are lots of interesting moments and I enjoy the fact that it is a detective book.

Aria: I like reading ‘Mallory Towers’ because it is an adventure book and it could all happen in real life. This means that you don’t need an amazing imagination to enjoy them.

Eleanor P: I am reading ‘The Hatmakers’ and it is a magical story and I would definitely recommend it to others.

World Book Day was oodles of fun! Thank you to the Library staff, to Mrs Wilkins and to all of the other teachers who helped make this day special, not forgetting a massive thank you to all of the costume designers at home! We had a great day!

In the last few weeks in English lessons, Year 5 pupils spent time looking at different myths such as Pandora’s Box and Daedalus and Icarus before having a go at writing their own myths.

In 5C, it was a delight to read why we have rainbows (all because of a creature called the Popcorn Pet!), that volcanoes came to be because the Gods that lived in the underworld who were always getting wet from the sea waves that came down a large hole in mountain and who would have thought that the Northern Lights were created by three bored children using snow, colour dye and torches!

Great creativity and wonderful writing, 5C!

We wish you all a relaxing weekend,

The Year 5 Team
