JUNIOR DEPARTMENT NEWS

This week in Reception

On Monday morning Reception enjoyed a puppet show. Our pupils listened to the famous, and much loved fairy tale stories of the Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Both stories were brought to life with an array of fantastic props and there was plenty of audience participation too. What a perfect way to start the week.

On Tuesday we had a very excited group of superheroes flying into Beechwood Park School! On arrival to Reception, the superheroes filled in their superhero ID cards. Then the children went to a special superhero Junior Department assembly, which was led by Mr Balfour. Years One and Two were very impressed when the Reception superheroes walked into assembly in their amazing outfits! Next, the children enjoyed a carousel of superhero activities. One of the activities was making special superhero potions and there were some marvelous messy ones created in the outdoor classroom. Another activity was creating superhero helicopter stories and the children demonstrated very imaginative story telling skills. The third activity was constructing superhero cities for a collection of mini superhero toys. The children worked cooperatively in groups and used a variety of construction materials to make fantastic buildings for their superheroes to protect. In the afternoon, all the Reception superheroes went outdoors and had to use their super team work skills to complete a series of exciting challenges. Finally there was some time for Child Initiated Learning which featured a superhero theme! Reception had a fantastic Superhero time – well done to all our Reception superheroes on a super day!

This week in Year 1

Yesterday, Year One had a wonderful time visiting the Roald Dahl Gallery in Aylesbury. We travelled in a Great Glass Elevator, crawled through Fantastic Mr Fox’s tunnel and some of us even got eaten by the Enormous Crocodile (luckily just on a green screen)! We played with shadows, explored optical illusions, used microscopes and changed our voices with exciting gadgets. If all of that wasn’t exciting enough, we also got to look at some taxidermy predators and made our very own predator puppets to take home. It’s hard to put into words how much fun we had, so we’ll leave you with these words from Dahl himself:

“I must say it’s quite an experience,’ Sophie said. ‘It’s a razztwizzler,’ the BFG said. ‘It’s gloriumptious.’” –The BFG

Here’s some  photos of our day.

This week in Year 2

Year 2 have begun learning about Space and looking at astronauts in particular Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake.  We used pastels to create an image from the Moon Landing. Please find a link to Year 2 photos from our Art lesson here

In line with the theme of space, our Year 2 pupils this week also enjoyed building 3D rockets as part of our Space topic. Mr Fox popped down to show the children some space objects made in the 3D printer, which as you can imagine made the children very happy.  They are now getting very excited about their DT lessons in the studio in Yr 3

From the Junior Library

Funny Bums, Freaky Beaks and Other Incredible Creature Features. by Alex Morss & Sean Taylor

This is one of those books that sucks children in with the title and keeps hold of them throughout. The illustrations are stunning and the information is jam-packed. Each animal characteristic has its own paragraph, opening up plenty of scope for further discussion and the ability to dip in and out over time. Who knew the Australian Spotted Katydid has ears on its legs, or that the Naked Mole Rat has teeth outside its mouth?

Teacher’s book of the week

This week it is Mrs Philips’ turn to recommend a book. She has chosen The Smartest Giant in Town, as she loves how the giant thinks of others before himself!
