I hope you were able to check out our Tapestry posts on Tuesday 1st February all about the Lunar New Year?

We had a really busy and informative day where the children had so many experiences, all of which enabled them to learn about the Lunar New Year.

One of our activities was to paint fans. The history of the Chinese fan dates back to over 3,000 years ago, around the Shang Dynasty (circa 1600 – 1046 BC). The “feather fan” became popular among the aristocracy because it was extremely expensive to produce. Made of bird feathers, it was widely recognized as the symbol of wealth, authority, and wisdom.  We didn’t use feathers, but instead the children created their fans using paper plates and lolly sticks, and thoroughly enjoyed fanning themselves with their finished articles!

By learning and understanding different cultures, your children understand why people do things the way they do. When we identify with other people, we are more likely to sympathise with their situation. This facilitates understanding and prevents misunderstandings. Like I said last week, we strive to expose your children to (almost) everything. We all have a vitally important role … bringing up children to live harmoniously in their adult years.
