Welcome to the Middle Department

The Middle Department forms are located in their own purpose-built section of the School. This Department comprises Years 3, 4 and 5 – the first three years of Key Stage 2, or simply put, pupils from age 7 to 10.

The Middle Department is a vibrant, dynamic part of the School, where children have the opportunity to flourish and develop in every area of their learning. A broad, balanced and exciting curriculum, enhanced by highly skilled and specialist teachers, is tailored to the needs of the children. A Growth Mindset permeates all that we do, and this is an approach we encourage in each and every one of the children in our care.

Setting is introduced initially in Mathematics in Year 4, and then in English in Year 5. This enables children to make the best progress possible. It is an important aspect of the way in which we deliver the curriculum according to your child’s needs. Within all sets at Beechwood, extension and consolidation work is available where necessary, to stretch more able pupils and lift those who may need more encouragement.

Children take formal tests during the year which serve as preparation for examinations later in their school careers.

As part of the curriculum, pupils are able to participate in an extensive programme of educational visits and activities. These include destinations such as Ashridge and the Roald Dahl Museum, and a visit from a Viking, a Mathematics workshop, and the highlight for our Year 5 pupils is a residential trip to Norfolk.

Middle Department pupils participate in Beechwood’s wide-ranging after-school activities programme, such as choirs and ensembles, and lunchtime or after school clubs, including cheerleading, gardening, art and chess. It is in the Middle Department that the children first have the opportunity to represent their House and the School at sport, including athletics, cricket, football, netball, rounders, rugby and swimming.

Pupils from Year 5 also have the opportunity to get a taste of boarding life.

By the end of their time in the Middle Department children are well prepared for life in the Senior Department. They have become more independent and are increasingly able to take responsibility for their work and organisation.

We look forward to welcoming you to Beechwood Middle Department
